Award-winning photojournalist Tanya Ackerman shares her love affair with South Carolina’s Lowcountry through the lens of her camera. Her images portray the natural beauty of coastal settings and the passions of the people who live there. The stories and emotions captured in her photographs have earned her scores of accolades during her newspaper career. The South Carolina Press Association named her Photojournalist of the Year in the All Weekly Newspaper Division four times since she moved to Pawleys Island as a staff photographer for the Coastal Observer in 2006.
Her love of the outdoors and her photographic eye were nurtured by her mother, an avid nature photographer. From her father, a jazz musician, composer and music educator, Tanya inherited her exuberant approach to life that enables her to tap into the unique joys and sorrows of each subject she photographs.
She digs beneath the surface to bestow her photographs with the power to inspire a smile, a tear or a call to action. She seeks out new ways to tell the stories of people and places in ways they haven’t been told before.
Tanya received a degree in photojournalism from Kent State University and worked for six years as a staff photographer at The Greenville News, in Greenville, S.C. She relocated to Pawleys Island and focused her lens on this coastal community and its people to document the impact of encroaching development on a piece of the fabric of American life.
Whether you are a lifelong resident or a newcomer, a frequent visitor or a first-time guest in this scenic and historic beach town, Tanya Ackerman’s photographs are windows to the majesty and many moods of the special place called Pawleys Island.

Vanessa Greene

My life in photography began at the age of three, behind the viewfinder of my father’s Speedgraphic. Raised on military bases, I was usually the only African American girl in my grade, and often lonely. My camera became my best friend, my entrée to gatherings and social events. By my junior year of high school, I had decided to become a professional photographer, like Gordon Parks. My dad convinced me to attend college first. I attended Simmons College in Boston followed by a rich and diverse 40-year career in community development, arts management, and philanthropy. As I continue to hone my artistic practice, a major goal is to organize, exhibit and ‘re-gift’ my vibrant, historically relevant body of works to the people and their descendants within the communities where the images originated. My camera is always with me.
